Australian Football is well established in Canada, with active competitions operating across four provinces. Footy matches commenced in Toronto in 1989 with the formation of the Mississauga Mustangs and the Toronto Panthers and the Ontario Australian Football League and is the oldest in the Northern Hemisphere and one of the largest outside Australia. Clubs formed in British Columbia and Alberta in 2001, while a Quebec competition commenced in 2008. Canada currently boasts both the men's and women's reigning US Nationals Champion clubs and has established national team programs at senior and junior levels for men and women.
Youth development programs currently operate in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, both within the school system and as organized junior footy leagues.
Canadian Australian Football Association (CAFA) formed in 1989 OAFL operated under the banner of CAFA from 1989-2001.
