The AFL and members of the Kangaroos board met today to discuss various issues concerning the long-term future of the football club.

It was the AFL’s first opportunity to meet with directors since the Kangaroos’ recent board elections.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou re-confirmed the AFL’s financial commitment to the Kangaroos and re-affirmed its agreement to play 10 games over three years on the Gold Coast.

"The AFL wants to restate its full support for the Kangaroos Board and the North Melbourne Football Club,” Demetriou said.

"We spoke about how the AFL can help make the Kangaroos a strong, viable and successful club for the next 50 years.

"The AFL re-affirmed that it has an agreement in place to play 10 games over three years and that commitment stands. I want to say there is no suggestion or plan for the Kangaroos to move to the Gold Coast next year or the year after.

"The AFL also re-affirmed its financial commitment and support for the redevelopment of Arden St to ensure the Kangaroos have a quality environment in which to train and our commitment to the future of the 16 AFL clubs.

"We also outlined our long-term vision and plans to expand football on the Gold Coast.

"What we are doing is providing an opportunity for the Kangaroos or any other Melbourne-based club to be involved in that expansion," he said.

Kangaroos chairman Graham Duff said he was pleased with the AFL’s presentation and support.

“The main point is that the three-year deal stands. We will play 10 games over three years at Carrara as we have agreed to,” Duff said.

“The AFL provided us with information both on their assistance for the Kangaroos, and their long-term vision for the Gold Coast.

“The board will now go away and consider all the information that we have.

“The Kangaroos Board has a responsibility to make a decision for the long-term future of the club and to set a vision that will deliver financial strength for our club, certainty for our supporters and the ability to deliver future premiership success.”
