The NAB AFL Rising Star Program is designed to identify and develop talented young footballers. Essentially, the program provides the pathway to being drafted into the AFL.
The stages of this program are:
1. Representative
Players will continue to develop their skills while being introduced to technical and tactical skills of the game.
Talented young players (aged 12-14 years) excelling in local leagues will be asked to play in local representative teams e.g. inter-league competitions/carnivals.
2. State Development Program
Players (aged 15-16 years) continue to develop their skills while building stronger bodies required to play at this level.
Selection into state development teams takes place, and the pathway to playing at the elite level (AFL) begins.
3. State Under 18 Competitions
Players (aged 17-18 years) receive high level training and coaching on and off the field.
Talented players excelling in these competitions will be asked to play for their state in the national championships.
Through the draft system, AFL clubs will select players in the State Under 18 Competition to play in the AFL.
