IN CELEBRATION of AFL Heritage Round, afl.com.au/markgoal is offering footy
fans the opportunity to take themselves back to the 1970s, an era of century goal-kickers,
high-flying screamers, coloured shorts, full-on facial hair, goal umpires
resplendent in fashionable white ‘lab’ coats, and streamers and floggers lining
the goal-to-goal line.
The 1970s spawned some the most iconic marks and goals in league
history and during Heritage Round the Toyota AFL Mark and Goal of the Year
website is asking fans to vote on their favourite speccie and goal.
Football fans will recognise some of the memorable moments
from the 70s with many brought back to prominence as part of Toyota’s popular Legendary Moments TV ad.
Featuring on afl.com.au/markgoal
is arguably football’s most famous mark - and piece of TV commentary. Alex
Jesaulenko’s ‘You Beauty …’ 1970 VFL Grand Final screamer inspired the
Jesaulenko Medal, awarded to the winner of the 2007 Toyota AFL Mark of the
Year.
Phil Manassa, who lends his name to the medal awarded to the
winner of the 2007 Toyota AFL Goal of the Year, features with his dashing run
down the wing in the 1977 VFL Grand Final Replay.
Is there a more memorable goal than Wayne Harmes’ diving tap-on
to Ken Sheldon in the 1979 Grand Final?
Is there a longer goal than Malcolm Blight’s barrelling torp
after the siren in 1976?
Fans can view and vote for their favourite mark and goal of
the 1970s, along with the current weekly nominees at afl.com.au/markgoal
