After nine straight losses, Fremantle finally broke through for its first derby win. And they did it convincingly by 47 points led by Adrian Fletcher, Clem Michael and with three goals to Tony Modra. Worsfold was no longer in the side, having been dumped during the previous year's finals series by coach Mick Malthouse, but there were still plenty of premiership players in the Eagles' midst – Jakovich, Kemp, Matera, McKenna, McIntosh plus a youngster named Ben Cousins.p>
Now the purple army could look forward to a two-sided rivalry. Since that July day in 1999, Fremantle has more than held its own, winning 10 of the next 19 clashes.
They entered this famous round 22 clash with both contending for the finals for the first time since Fremantle entered the competition. And the match they delivered for the 43,027 fans was arguably the best of the season.
Fremantle was ahead by 19 points at the last change but the Eagles threw everything into the final quarter. They dominated the first 15 minutes but kicked a wasteful 1.7 before Freo took their chances and bolted away again. But West Coast wasn't finished, with then 20-year-old Daniel Kerr producing the goal of the year, a five-bounce running stunner from almost 50m out after grabbing the ball deep in the backline.
Fremantle grabbed fifth spot on the ladder after its win and West Coast ended up seventh. But such was the intensity of this battle that both sides barely raised a whimper in their elimination finals the next week
Still smarting from a 117-point drubbing at the hands of West Coast in the first cross-town derby of the 2000 season, Fremantle had a point to prove to its arch rivals when they met again in round 21.
Clive Waterhouse booted seven goals for Freo, who overcame a three-quarter time deficit to record a thrilling one-point win that would prove to be a turning point in a rivalry that had been dominated by the Eagles to that point.
Drew Banfield was important for West Coast with 21 possessions, but the match will be most remembered for the chaotic scenes after the half-time siren that saw several players involved in spiteful clashes across the ground.
In one of the busiest tribunal sittings in history, fines totalling $31,500 were handed out to 11 players, while four players were hit with suspensions and Fremantle's Dale Kickett banned for nine matches.
