The annual SAFF awards night took place on Friday night with AFL Superstar Jimmy Bartel making a special showing in Stockholm, Sweden.
Less than a month ago, Geelong Cat Jimmy Bartel was winning the most honored award in Australian football the Brownlow Medal. The dream of nearly every player that plays the game, and if that was not enough, just a few days later, an AFL premiership in front of a crowd of 100 thousand people to go with it. He could now be enjoying a well deserved holiday on the beach before having to get back to training but not the biggest name in football.
Jimmy has been traveling around Europe promoting the game that not only do Australians love, but is growing in popularity in Europe. After visiting Denmark and Finland, Jimmy flew up to visit the Stockholm and caught up with some of the members of the Swedish National team whom have recently won the European Championships and are preparing themselves for their first appearance in the International Cup in Melbourne 2008.
The formal evening was hosted by the Stockholm Region Australian Football Federation, and was Stockholm’s equivalent to a Brownlow medal night. After making an very sincere speech and helping raise some money for the club, Jimmy did the honors of handing out the medals to the up and coming Swedish talent as will as a few Australian ex-pats. The night was a huge success and the major award of the night was taken out by Swedish National Player and Södermalm Blue Saint, Max Larsson.
With only enough time for a quick game of golf the day after, Jimmy was jetting back to Denmark to play in an exhibition game before heading to Spain for some more promotional work.
