My best 22: Joel Selwood

BACKS
Terry Daniher
I'm going to pick my squad with a 'brothers in arms' theme - and where better to start than with the most successful of the four Daniher brothers? Terry was a dual premiership captain who could play at both ends of the ground. A proven match-winner in his day playing for South Melbourne and Essendon.

Darryl Wakelin
A premiership defender who got the most out of his body playing for St Kilda and Port Adelaide. He and brother Shane were arguably the most successful twins to play AFL football.

Brad Scott
One of the two ‘bash brothers’, Brad played at Hawthorn before joining his brother at the Brisbane Lions. I know a few boys at Geelong are still having nightmares about them.

HALF-BACKS
Chris Scott
The other of the two ‘bash brothers’, both triple premiership players with the Lions.

Glen Jakovich
The West Coast stalwart had some famous bouts with Wayne Carey over the years, not to mention an onfield kiss he received from brother, Melbourne forward Allen, during one match.

Duncan Kellaway
A tight, no-fuss footballer who is still kicking the ball better than ever as Geelong’s head physio these days.

CENTRES
Garry Hocking
A hard in-and-under midfielder with a floating curly mullet to go with his hard game style.

Michael Voss
An inspirational leader, he was one of the most feared players going around. A Brownlow medallist and triple premiership captain, he had to be included in this list.

Peter Matera
A dashing speedy wingman from the West Coast Eagles who was one of the most highly skilled players to play the game.

HALF-FORWARDS
Darren Jarman
A big game player, brother of the silky smooth Andrew, and a pure match-winner.

Matthew Lloyd
I couldn’t find a spot for him deep due to the calibre of players, but anyone who has kicked as many goals as he has deserves a run.

Jim Krakouer
An electrifying indigenous player who teamed with his brother, Phil, at North Melbourne to give plenty of headaches to back pockets across the land.

FORWARDS
Gordon Coventry
The second highest goalscorer of all time, his selection is self-explanatory.

Gary Ablett Sr
He still gives me goose bumps when he’s around the club. I’m in awe of how much ability one man can have.

Leigh Matthews
An inspirational leader who snapped a goal post during one match. A legend of the game.

FOLLOWERS
Simon Madden
Just a huge man who smashed the opposition with his ruck work and was ahead of the game (literally).

Robert Harvey
A guy I respected immensely for his amazing work rate. It was an honour to be lucky enough to have played against him.

Gary Ablett Jr
A superstar current Cats player who leaves opposition and teammates shaking their heads at what he is capable of.

INTERCHANGE
Ian Nankervis
Geelong’s club game record-holder, playing 325 games for the Cats in a career spanning the three decades.

Justin Madden
A Carlton big man who covered the game really well for such a giant.

Luke Power
Great skills and super football brain. A great effort to play in the Lions’ three-peat.

Shane Crawford
A champion Hawthorn on-baller and a Brownlow medallist, he deserved a premiership. Pity it had to come last year against us!
