IF YOU want an example of how quickly football fortunes can change, look no further than North Melbourne ruckman Hamish McIntosh.

Offered up as trade bait during last October’s exchange period, McIntosh was this week voted best on ground by both North coach Dean Laidley and his Melbourne counterpart Dean Bailey.

In the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year – the only award voted for by the coaches themselves – McIntosh’s three-goal performance against the Demons won him the maximum possible tally of 10 votes.

Matching McIntosh's tally in the opening round were five other players: Adelaide veteran Andrew McLeod, Demon-turned-Lion Travis Johnstone, St Kilda’s Nick Dal Santo, champion Cat Paul Chapman and Western Bulldog Matthew Boyd.

Port Adelaide dynamo Danyle Pearce was the next man back in the field with nine votes.

Coaches decide the Champion Player of the Year by awarding votes each week on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis. Coaches vote only on their own matches, but may vote for players on the opposing team.

Past winners of the prestigious award include Gary Ablett Jr (2007-08), Simon Goodwin and Adam Goodes (joint winners in 2006), Barry Hall (2005) and Warren Tredrea (2004).
