After topping the coaches’ votes at the ground against Carlton in round four, Shaw again stood out in the Swans’ win over Richmond on Sunday, winning seven votes from coaches Paul Roos and Terry Wallace in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award.
St Kilda’s Farren Ray was another recycled player to enjoy a day out against his old side, winning four votes from current coach Ross Lyon and ex-coach Rodney Eade after Sunday’s comfortable Docklands win.
Nine votes from the same game catapulted Saint Brendon Goddard up the leaderboard, where he joins two other Saints in the top five: Nick Riewoldt and Nick Dal Santo.
While six players won maximum votes on the weekend – including Hawthorn hero Jarryd Roughead – perhaps the biggest turn-up was at Skilled Stadium, where runaway leader Gary Ablett failed to poll a vote for the first time all season.
The two-time winner’s groin injury will keep him out for at least a fortnight, giving the chasing pack some chance of eating into his current 11-vote lead.
In the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year – the only award voted for by the coaches themselves – coaches vote each week on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis. Coaches vote only on their own matches, but may vote for players on the opposing team.
Past winners of the prestigious award include Gary Ablett Jr (2007-08), Simon Goodwin and Adam Goodes (joint winners in 2006), Barry Hall (2005) and Warren Tredrea (2004).
