STEVE Johnson has a Norm Smith Medal, a premiership medal and now he is leading the pack in the prestigious AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year – the only award voted for by the coaches themselves.

Johnson polled the maximum 10 votes for his six-goal performance in the Cats demolition of Essendon on Sunday afternoon at Docklands to overtake Gary Ablett who had led since round four, despite missing two games with injury.

Dual winner Ablett polled just one vote on Sunday against the Bombers which leaves him two shy of Johnson’s tally of 52 votes.

The other big mover among the leaders was Chris Judd, who polled eight for his sublime match against West Coast to grab outright third spot with 46 votes.

Saints captain Nick Riewoldt polled seven votes in his side’s victory over Melbourne at Gold Coast Stadium and is in fourth place on 44 four clear of Nick Dal Santo.

Riewoldt’s teammate Lenny Hayes leapt to sixth after another awesome game that earned him the maximum 10 votes at Carrara.

Other big vote winners from round 10 included Adelaide’s Scott Thompson, who got 10 votes for his effort against Hawthorn, Jed Adcock from the Brisbane Lions, who also got the maximum against North Melbourne and Dane Swan, whose 48 possessions against Power won him 10 votes as well.

Daniel Giansiracusa and Brett Deledio each polled nine votes in their games.

In the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year, coaches vote each week on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis. Coaches vote only on their own matches, but may vote for players on the opposing team.

Past winners of the prestigious award include Gary Ablett (2007-08), Simon Goodwin and Adam Goodes (joint winners in 2006), Barry Hall (2005) and Warren Tredrea (2004).
