The moment: Terry Wallace led his Tigers off the field for the final time after losing by 68 points to his old club. But there was to be no sentimental send-off for the departing senior coach. Just to show they hadn't forgotten his ugly exit, Dogs' fans gave him a hostile send off.

The moment: With the game well and truly over, the way Jason Gram pursued and tackled Daniel Pratt in the dying minutes said much about the player and the team. Gram, who was dropped a few weeks ago, kicked the last goal of the match after catching Pratt holding the ball. He is a man clearly on a mission to secure a spot in an unbeaten line-up.

The moment: Having watched a 30-point lead evaporate, Carlton were desperate for a steadying goal midway through the last quarter. Brendan Fevola already had seven goals, but he still had one more trick in the play book. A free kick preceded a superb set shot from a tight angle on the left. The Blues never looked back and Fev let the crowd know all about it.

4. Port Adelaide 14.10 (94) d Fremantle 11.4 (70) at AAMI Stadium

The moment: A head injury to Fremantle forward Adam Campbell forced a seven-minute delay late in the first term. Port coach Mark Williams, who was already down on the boundary line, thought he’d use the opportunity to address his struggling team. But the umpire was onto Choco’s plans and forbid the boundary line exchange. Williams – apparently unaware such a rule existed – was captured on camera ‘politely’ questioning the decision.

The moment: Key Crow forward Kurt Tippett stole the show on Sunday with seven goals – several of them beauties. Soon after kicking a brilliant set-shot banana from the Coventry End boundary in the second quarter, he landed a beautiful drop punt from the opposite pocket. But the best moment came deep in the same term – a classical hanger over Bomber Courtenay Dempsey.

6. Hawthorn 12.14 (86) d Sydney Swans 11.9 (75) at the MCG

The moment: Midway through the final term and the Swans had kicked four out of five goals to trail by just four points. With the ball in the Swans' attacking 50, Barry Hall gave away a free kick, a 50m penalty, another, then another. As Hawk Jarryd Roughead goaled from point blank range, Hall was dragged, to icy stares from coach Paul Roos and a chorus of boos – possibly from fans of both teams.

The moment: Young Eagle Jamie McNamara did some impressive things on Sunday. He also joined an exclusive club of footballers to have forgotten which way their side is kicking. Late in the third term McNamara roved Dean Cox's ruck tap and bolted from the wing towards the Cats' goal. Tom Swift's pleading couldn't stop him, and he only realised his error as boot went to ball. It was too late – Cat Shannon Byrnes gobbled up the easy goal.

The moment: Jack Watts didn’t take long to get his first AFL possession, but the Demon No.1 draft pick had to earn it. Coming off the bench, he found the ball on centre wing and was immediately set upon by three snarling Magpie defenders. When Watts emerged, he’d won a free kick and enough bruises to ensure that he will remember his debut in the morning.
