GARY Ablett has soared back to the lead in the prestigious AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year – the only award voted for by the coaches themselves.

Ablett polled nine of a possible 10 votes for his 43-possession performance at Subiaco Oval against West Coast on Sunday to leap to 59 votes at the half-way point of the season.

Ablett held the lead from round four to round 10 despite missing two games with injury. But fellow SuperCat Steve Johnson snatched the lead for one week after his sublime six-goal game in round 10 against Essendon.

But Johnson's reign wasn't to last as he was well beaten by Tyson Stenglein in the west while Ablett continued on his merry way.

Dean Cox shared top billing with Ablett, also polling nine votes.

Cox's former Eagles teammate Chris Judd is sitting in second place with 55 votes after another eye-catching match against the Lions at the Gabba earned him nine votes.

Johnson remains in 3rd place on 52 votes.

He is one of three Cats in the top 10 but the Saints have gone one better with four players on the leaderboard.

Collingwood's Alan Didak was the only player to earn the maximum 10 votes in round 11, for his massive Queen's Birthday effort against Melbourne.

Big goalkickers featured prominently with Justin Koschitzke (six goals) grabbing nine votes in the Saints' come-from-behind win over North Melbourne on Saturday, and Brendan Fevola also getting nine votes for his eight goals in the Blues win over the Lions.

Seven-goal surprise packet Kurt Tippett also got nine votes in the Crows' win over Essendon.

Adam Cooney was the top vote-winner in an even Bulldogs' performance on Friday night over Richmond, as was Port Adelaide's Kane Cornes against Fremantle.

Swan Adam Goodes got top votes in a losing side on Sunday against Hawthorn.

In the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year, coaches vote each week on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis. Coaches vote only on their own matches, but may vote for players on the opposing team.

Past winners of the prestigious award include Gary Ablett (2007-08), Simon Goodwin and Adam Goodes (joint winners in 2006), Barry Hall (2005) and Warren Tredrea (2004).
