NEWLY appointed AIS/AFL Academy high performance coach Jason McCartney looks at the players who caught his eye in the fifth round of the 2009 NAB AFL Under-18 championships.

NSW/ACT 13.6 (84) d Tasmania 6.11 (47) at Docklands

NSW/ACT
Dylan McNeil

A smart on-baller with a fantastic work rate. He was so good around the stoppages and really impressive finishing work in front of goal. He had 17 disposals, five marks and four goals and also won the Hunter Harrison Medal for Division 2 best player.
Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft

Trent Stubbs

Lightly framed half-forward with really good athleticism. He has very strong hands in the marking contest and is a particularly good reader of the ball, enabling him to really fly third man up. Very good contested mark. He was really consistent in his last two games of the championships. He had 13 disposals, kicked two goals, took six marks – two contested.
Draft eligibility: NSW scholarship holder with Hawthorn

Will Langford
Had 16 disposals and three inside-50s. He was pretty consistent throughout, playing half-back wing. He’s so good in a one-on-one situation. He rarely gets beaten, never goes to ground and just provides a lot of run and dash. There’s a lot to like about Will.
Draft eligibility: NSW scholarship holder with Hawthorn

TAS
Cameron Milne

He’s one of the over-age players who played last year. He really grabbed hold of his opportunity. I believe he was the best ruckman in Division 2. He dominated the hit-outs again on Wednesday. He’s worked really well spreading from the contest. Not just his ability at the contest in centre-bounces and ball-ups, he’s actually getting out quickly and becoming an option pushing forward. He’s also applying good defensive pressure.
Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft

Rhys Mott
Left-footed inside midfielder who spends time forward. Just makes good decisions and uses the ball extremely well with his kicking skills. Tasmania did turn the ball over a fair bit by foot on Wednesday, so although he only had 13 disposals, it made him really shine and stand out.
Draft eligibility: 2010 NAB AFL draft

Josh Green
A leading possession winner on the ground. He mainly played through the midfield and on the wing. He’s got a really nice sidestep and turn of speed. Probably let himself down a little bit with his finishing skills – he kicked 1.4. But he had 22 disposals, five inside-50s and was quite exciting in the third quarter coming off the line and showing some really clean, crisp centre clearance work.
Draft eligibility: 2010 NAB AFL draft

Northern Territory 9.6 (60) d Queensland 8.11 (59) at Docklands

Northern Territory
Roland Ah Chee

He has been a prolific ball-winner throughout the championships. Demonstrated his first class work rate and showed an ability to win the contested and uncontested ball. He had 25 disposals, eight inside-50s and three centre clearances – he’s really good at the centre-square work.
Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft

Deon Gordon
A running, creative medium sized half-back. He’s got really neat skills. He was exceptionally good on Wednesday in a contested situation. He had 25 disposals, six marks, three inside-50s and three rebound -50s.
Draft eligibility: 2009 NAB AFL draft

Steven May
A strong key position forward and left-footer who presented really well at the ball on Wednesday. He won most of his football in a contested situation. This was probably one of his better games of the carnival – 16 disposals, four marks, three goals.
Draft eligibility: Gold Coast can sign him as one of its 12 17-year-olds born January-April 1992. If not selected, he is eligible for the 2010 NAB AFL Draft.

Queensland
Thomas Holland

This was the only game he played during the championships. He’s an indigenous boy from Thursday Island who boards now at Scotch College. He played a medium defender role, and has a great ability to play on talls or smalls. Outnumbers well at the contest and has an exceptional sidestep which he uses to great effect. Twenty disposals and six rebound-50s.
Draft eligibility: 2010 NAB AFL draft

Matt Fowler
Medium forward who is really strong overhead. Unfortunately on Wednesday his goalkicking was a little off – he kicked 1.4 – but he would be the most consistent player for Queensland throughout the championships. He had 23 disposals and is a terrific mark who plays well above his size. Fourteen marks – and that would be the most number of marks by anyone in the championships – and four inside 50s. Certainly one the Gold Coast would look closely at.
