The moment: With the Hawks wasting chances at one end, the Crows were kicking them while lying down. After the ball fell out the back to Trent Hentschel on Friday night, his low handball found Richard Douglas who stumbled near the goal line. Lying on the ground, he rolled over and booted a freakish goal.

2. Collingwood 22.20 (152) d Richmond 8.11 (59) at the MCG

The moment: With no consequences to fear, retiring Tiger Joel Bowden could have been forgiven for piling into the huge melee that broke out midway through the second term. But if you look closely, you’ll see him pluck the ball out of the scuffle and flick it back to the umpire while all around him lost their heads. Classy.

3. West Coast 17.8 (110) d North Melbourne 10.12 (72) at Subiaco

The moment: Nic Naitanui can already do almost anything in the ruck, and during the third quarter he set about doing everything. In the Eagles’ best passage of play, Nic-Nat won the hit-out, then won the clearance and tapped that clearance on to Matt Priddis. The ball ended with Andrew Embley, who booted the goal of the game from beyond 50m.

4. Western Bulldogs 15.12 (102) d Brisbane Lions 12.12 (84) at the Gabba

The moment: Jason Akermanis, on his left foot, deep in the pocket, 20 minutes into the final quarter with his side up by 14 points and the Lions closing like a steam train. At the ground where everyone used to love him, Aker calmly slotted the goal, silenced the Gabba crowd and cemented the Bulldogs' top-four spot.

5. Geelong 13.14 (92) d Sydney Swans 13.9 (87) at ANZ Stadium

The moment: Young Swans midfielder Dan Hannebery picked a fine moment to boot his first AFL goal. The Swans had trailed all night but were charging early in the third term. A scrubby kick from Jarred Moore found Hannebery on the 50m arc and the 18-year-old turned around and kicked truly off two steps, igniting the 40,000-strong crowd.

6. Melbourne 20.7 (127) d Fremantle 9.10 (64) at the MCG

The moment: Lynden Dunn’s speculative long pass floated towards Demon veteran Russell Robertson, who was surrounded by five Freo defenders. Numerical superiority mattered little, however, as Robbo launched off Garrick Ibbotson, went horizontal mid-air and snatched the ball from Greg Broughton from behind his head. Vintage Robbo, and a bright spot in a mediocre contest.

7. Carlton 18.13 (121) d Port Adelaide 9.13 (67) at AAMI Stadium

The moment: With the game in the balance early in the final term, Brendan Fevola marked just a couple of metres from goal on a tight angle. He played on and kicked into the Power player on the mark but umpire Hayden Kennedy called it back and gave him another kick. Fevola didn’t miss this time and the Blues went on to win easily.

8. Essendon 16.14 (110) d St Kilda 16.12 (108) at Docklands

The moment: St Kilda needed only two kicks to take a two-goal lead in Sunday's thriller. Nick Dal Santo pounced on an Essendon error after 53 seconds to goal with the side's first kick. Then, as Dal Santo's kick sailed through, Nathan Lovett-Murray infringed against Sam Fisher, resulting in another goal without the ball returning to the centre.
