The moment: With Carlton slipping out to a 10-point lead late in the third quarter, it was left to Jonathan Brown to haul the Lions back into the contest. Gathering 55 metres out from a Carlton kick-out, he took two steps and banged it through the middle. That put the Lions within four points and with momentum heading into the final term.

2. Collingwood 12.14 (86) d Melbourne 12.13 (85)

The moment: Ricky Petterd was Melbourne's hero all day, but he would have been written into Demon folklore had he clung on to a mark in the goal square in the game's dying seconds. With the Pies a point to the good, Magpie Steele Sidebottom helped strip the ball from Petterd's fingertips, spoiling the mark and Demon fans' Easter weekends.

3. St Kilda 23.5 (143) d North Melbourne 6.3 (39) at Etihad Stadium

The moment: While it is tempting to nominate the 30-minute stretch at the start of the game that netted St Kilda eight goals and North not a single point, the real moment was somewhat innocuous and happened late in the game. Nick Riewoldt was monstering his opponents, and after hanging on to a couple of ripping marks, he pushed up the ground and took a chest mark. Saints fans chanted in unison: “Roooooo!” Yes, they were officially excited.

4. Port Adelaide 13.11 (89) d West Coast 12.14 (86) at Subiaco Oval

The moment: Jason Davenport had plenty of highlights in his four-goal last quarter, but his standout effort came at the 17-minute mark as he nailed the match-winner. West Coast’s Beau Waters handballed to Matt Spangher at the top of the goal square, but when it bounced off Spangher’s chest, Davenport was there to swoop and soccer it home to put Port up by 11 points.

5. Sydney Swans 18.10 (118) d Adelaide 11.9 (75) at AAMI Stadium

The moment: In a game not particularly high on skill, Daniel Bradshaw's snap from deep in the pocket was the pick of the action. On his weaker left foot, Bradshaw bent the ball across goal and then got the necessary Shane Warne leggie to deceive the onrushing defender and set Sydney on their way to a big win. For pure deja vu, check out Ben McGlynn as the loose man in the forward line (yes, that's right!) kicking a career best five goals as the Crows refused to man him up...

6. Fremantle 17.11 (113) d Essendon 9.15 (69) at Etihad Stadium

The moment: After all the controversy surrounding Essendon’s decision to rename the Coventry end of Etihad Stadium after Matthew Lloyd, it seemed some Collingwood-supporting ghosts were on hand pre-game. The Bombers unveiled the sign only to find the banner still blanketing the first letter of Lloyd’s name. It was worthy of Spinal Tap and prompted giggles around the ground, including from Lloyd himself, before helping hands tugged on the curtain to reveal the double ‘L’.

7. Western Bulldogs 17.18 (120) d Richmond 7.6 (48) at the MCG

The moment: The Bulldogs' superior hand and foot skills were summed up in a passage of play which started from defence and ended in Josh Hill's third goal. It involved seven Bulldogs, starting with a handball from Daniel Cross in the back-pocket, before Ryan Griffen hit Hill uncontested inside 50. Textbook disposal efficiency.

8. Geelong 14.16 (100) d Hawthorn 13.13 (91) at the MCG

The moment: Hawthorn premiership player Michael Osborne submitted his goal of the year nomination in the form of a brilliant checkside dribble goal from the Great Southern Stand pocket. It was the end result of some smart evasive work - all the more incredible given that he was nearly knocked out in the first term.
