The moment: Ben McEvoy would have had the words, “never kick across the face of goal” ringing in his ears on Friday night. The Saints youngster tried to switch play deep in defence late in the second term only to see the ball fall into Jack Riewoldt’s hands. Riewoldt converted from the top of the square to kick the Tigers' first goal.

2. Carlton 15.11 (101) d Melbourne 9.6 (60) at the MCG

The moment: If Pim Verbeek was watching, Carlton's Mitch Robinson may be boarding a plane to South Africa soon. Early in the third quarter, Setanta O’hAilpin sent a handball towards Robinson running towards goal. With Cale Morton breathing down his neck, Robinson kicked the ball out of mid-air with some sensational reflexes and kicked the goal.

3. Adelaide 16.9 (105) d Fremantle 12.10 (82) at AAMI Stadium

The moment: Taylor Walker has become a cult figure in Adelaide and he showed why against Fremantle. Walker juggled a one-hand mark then dribbled a terrible kick around the corner. He wasn’t finished though, following up the kick, dummying Antoni Grover then hurdling Hayden Ballantyne. He strolled into the goal square and pumped the ball out of the ground.

4. North Melbourne 12.18 (90) d Brisbane Lions 13.11 (89) at Etihad Stadium

The moment: After kicking 5.5 against Freo last week, Lindsay Thomas may have found the accuracy answer on Saturday night. Midway through the second term, Thomas emerged from a marking contest minus his left boot but didn’t concede his attack on the ball. Thomas picked up the ball, threw the ball onto his left sock from 45m out and the ball sailed through.

5. Geelong 18.14 (122) d West Coast 14.14 (98) at Subiaco Oval

The moment: Nic Naitanui stole the show with a moment of brilliance to start the second half. After contesting the ruck, the big Fijian got on the end of a handball but couldn’t escape the pressure of Jimmy Bartel. He could outrun him, though, as he chased down his kick. He collected out wide on 50 and kicked a remarkable goal from near the boundary.

6. Sydney Swans 12.17 (89) d Essendon 12.8 (80) at the SCG

The moment: The best and worst of Swans forward Jesse White was on display in the third term. White attacked the ball on the half-forward flank, only to overrun it badly and concede possession. Undaunted, he persisted to lay a huge tackle on his Bomber opponent to make up for his error. He finished with three goals to help the Swans win.

7. Hawthorn 10.14 (74) d Port Adelaide 8.15 (63) at the MCG

The moment: While the conditions were slippery, Port Adelaide's kicking was woeful during the opening quarter. Finally, after 33-goalless minutes of spraying the ball around, promising youngster Tom Logan took a mark 45m out, went back and calmly drilled the Sherrin through the middle. His effort had his teammates, coaches and Port's smattering of travelling fans, breathing a sigh of relief.

8. Collingwood 17.11 (113) d Western Bulldogs 16.7 (103) at Etihad Stadium

The moment: With the Bulldogs regaining their bite in the final quarter and mounting a challenge to the Pies, Jarrad Grant shone under the Etihad Stadium lights. Gathering the ball on the half-forward line, the skinny forward put on the afterburners, taking three bounces and leaving both Ben Reid and Sharrod Wellingham in his wake as he kicked the Bulldogs fifth consecutive goal.
