The moment: Port Adelaide came out firing early. Daniel Stewart crumbed a ball off the back of the pack and strolled into the goal square. He bombed through the Power's second in the first four minutes but as he went to celebrate he forgot about the goalpost and cannoned straight into it. He clearly had his eyes firmly on the goals early.

2. Geelong 12.13 (85) d Hawthorn 11.17 (83) at the MCG

The moment: In the dying stages of the final term, a long bomb on goal from Clinton Young left Harry Taylor one on one in the goalsquare with Lance Franklin. Somehow, the Cat managed to land a paw on the ball, sending it through for a rushed behind. Moments later, Taylor took a brilliant mark from a clearing kick out of defence, saving his side yet again.

3. Adelaide 17.15 (117) d West Coast 14.11 (95) at Subiaco Oval

The moment: It was a classic 'what was he thinking?' moment when Eagle Scott Selwood was on the end of a chain of handballs out of defence and decided to fire off one more. Only problem was his target was field umpire Stefan Grun. The ball spilled loose and the Crows surged forward with a running goal to Brad Symes.

4. St Kilda 11.13 (79) d Brisbane Lions 10.5 (65) at the Gabba

The moment: With the Lions slipping behind 26 minutes into the third quarter, Jack Redden booted the ball into the goal square and Aaron Cornelius took a run up from behind the goal posts and soared over the back of a pack to cleanly grasp a classic hanger in the square. He slotted the goal to draw the Lions back to within three points.

5. Richmond 15.10 (100) d Fremantle 11.15 (81) at Etihad Stadium

The moment: As the usually sure-footed and polished Matthew Pavlich charged into the goal-square and gathered the bouncing ball, he seemed to trip over his own feet and take a spectacular tumble that left him red-faced and sprawled on the turf with the ball dribbling through for a minor score.

6. Sydney Swans 12.13 (85) d North Melbourne 7.13 (55) at the SCG

The moment: Canadian import Mike Pyke nearly produced the goal of the season early in the fourth quarter. He soccered from the boundary pocket as the crowd erupted in celebration, only to have it taken away by a boundary umpire. Replays later showed it also hit the behind post, but the crowd was excited for the first time all day.

7. Melbourne 19.8 (122) d Essendon 14.19 (103) at the MCG

The moment:
With seconds to go in the opening term, Cameron Bruce managed to break away from an ugly pack on the wing and was heading towards goal. Sensing big ruckman Patrick Ryder gaining yards on Bruce, Jordie McKenzie laid a perfect shepherd. Despite the midfielder being crunched by the towering ruckman, it enabled Bruce to run clear and kick the goal.

8. Western Bulldogs 20.6 (126) d Carlton 8.10 (58) at Etihad Stadium

The moment:
It was rare to see Barry Hall outmuscled in a marking contest but Michael Jamison did just that in the second quarter. Clearly incensed by the move, Hall and teammate Jordan Roughead moved in to harass Jamison into dropping the ball when he went to play on. Hall promptly picked it up and kicked his third goal.
