THERE have been few better goalsneaks in recent times than St Kilda's Stephen Milne and therefore, few better able to rank the best small forwards of the past 25 years.

Saints fans will take little comfort from one of his selections. At No. 4 on his list, he plumps for Darren Jarman, the former Hawthorn and Adelaide forward who kicked five goals in the final quarter of the 1997 Grand Final to lead the Crows to victory over St Kilda.

"His ability on both the left and right side of his body was exquisite," Milne said on this week's edition of Personal Best, exclusive to AFL.com.au.

"His delivery to both Dermott Brereton and Jason Dunstall was exceptional and his ability to kick a freakish goal straight over the umpire's heads was amazing."

Milne was a Hawthorn supporter growing up and included another former Hawk, Paul Hudson, on his list. But irrespective of where the Hawks were playing, the player Milne liked to watch in person and to learn from was the Collingwood magician, Peter Daicos.

"People used to go to the footy just to watch Peter Daicos play. His ability to kick the oval ball in any direction at any given time of the game, [in] wind, rain, hail or sun was absolutely amazing. I used to go to Victoria Park just to watch him," Milne said.

Jeff Farmer, Mark Mercuri, Nathan Brown and Leon Davis are among the others to get a mention, but he looked outside Victoria and towards a famous football family for his surprise selection at No. 1.
