Melbourne-based artist Lanie Lane performs before and at half-time of Saturday night’s Geelong-Collingwood match at the MCG as part of the AFL’s ‘Live at the Footy’ program.

JAMES YOUNG: Is it true you worked as a florist to fund your debut album?

LANIE LANE: My first album had a low budget. Yes, I did work as a florist to help fund the record. I miss the sweet peas, roses and hydrangeas,

JY: You own a 1957 guitar named ‘Betty’. Do you have a 1950s style?

LL: I bought that beautiful acoustic guitar in Coogee and it was my favourite when I was starting up. Now it’s old, damaged and repaired, so I’ve retired it. The whole 1950s thing is a phase I was going through on the first album. I suppose I get pigeon holed in that phase.

JY: How exciting is it playing at the MCG?

LL: It’s really exciting, especially because I barrack for Collingwood. My label and Mushroom put a lot of pressure on me to pick St Kilda as my footy team (Mushroom boss Michael Gudinski is a Saints fan), but I love black and white, so I had to go with the Magpies.

JY: Were you into sport as a girl or has it always been about music for you?

LL: I wasn’t that sporty because I was scrawny as a kid and I always used to lose to my competitive neighbours in everything, cards: marbles, swimming, you name it. I played water polo for five minutes, but I got dumped a lot and practically drowned. So yes, music was a natural place for me to go.

JY: It feels like you're an overnight success, but it’s been some trip. Tell us a bit about your journey.

LL: I released my album less than a year ago and before that there were lots of $50 gigs in Sydney and touring with friends and writing music.

JY: Playing a mix of country, rockabilly and early rock ‘n roll seems a tough road to choose?

LL: I don’t think about what I do, it’s not a conscious thing. Later this year I’ll be recording my new album and it’s different again. I’ve been listening to a lot of 1970s music: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Dr John and the Doors, so I’m looking forward to exploring a new sound.
