BEN MCGLYNN has been ruled out of Saturday's Grand Final against Hawthorn after failing a fitness test on Tuesday morning on his injured hamstring.

Speculation had been swirling about McGlynn's fitness after he failed to front Tuesday afternoon's open training session, as had been flagged on Monday by coach John Longmire.

But it turns out he conducted a fitness test away from prying eyes on Tuesday morning, which he failed, and he will now miss Saturday's decider.

Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said McGlynn had fallen short in his bid to return to the side to take on his former team at the MCG.

“Unfortunately Benny wasn’t able to train today,” he said.

“He did a sprint test before training and whilst he sprinted once, when he sprinted again he had some discomfort, so really he failed that test in order to train.

“Not being able to train today and Thursday means he is unfortunately out of this game.”

Pictures of McGlynn in tears on the bench after being substituted out of the qualifying final against Adelaide had been one of the enduring images of this year's finals series.

He then quickly adopted a positive attitude and had done everything he could to prove his fitness, but has fallen agonisingly short.

His coach, who was seen consoling McGlynn on the bench after the Crows match, felt terrible for the 27-year-old.

“Since the initial disappointment after the qualifying final against the Crows, Benny has been extremely positive about his recovery,” Longmire said.

“He has been in at the club at every available opportunity and I’m positive there is nothing more he could have done to make himself available to play.

“Ben has played a big role in getting us to Saturday’s match and everyone at the club is disappointed he can’t play."

McGlynn had played 22 matches this season, kicking 30 goals, and was a vital part of Longmire's set-up until his injury.

But he now joins injured Hawk Brent Guerra, who has also been battling a hamstring problem, on the sidelines for the biggest game of the year.

The Swans are likely to go into the match unchanged from the team which beat Collingwood on Friday, with Ted Richards (ankle) showing no ill effects during a light training run on Tuesday.
