Just six compensation picks were handed out with Port Adelaide receiving two second-round picks (30 & 31) for the losses of Danyle Pearce and Troy Chaplin to Fremantle and Richmond respectively.

Melbourne received a third-round pick (49) for the club loss of Brent Moloney to the Brisbane Lions and Jared Rivers to Geelong while signing Shannon Byrnes from the Cats.

West Coast was handed a third-round pick (62) for the loss of Quinten Lynch to Collingwood with Hawthorn also getting a third rounder (66) for the loss of Clinton Young to the Pies.

Adelaide lost Chris Knights to the Tigers, but did not receive any compensation, while the Hawks, who lost Tom Murphy to Gold Coast, and the Cats, who lost Byrnes to the Dees, also got nothing back.

Earlier, the deadline for club's to sign players during the free agency period passed with former Carlton pair Jordan Russell and Bret Thornton and Port Adelaide's Steven Salopek still left looking for new homes.

St Kilda defender Raphael Clarke, an unrestricted free agent who had attracted some interest during free agency, also remained unsigned as the 5pm cut-off passed on Friday with little fanfare.

The free agency period began the Monday after the AFL Grand Final (Oct 1) with a total of 10 restricted and unrestricted free agents exercising their options to change clubs:

-    Chris Knights (unrestricted) signed with Richmond from Adelaide
-    Brendon Goddard (restricted) signed with Essendon from St Kilda
-    Quinten Lynch (unrestricted) signed with Collingwood from West Coast
-    Danyle Pearce (restricted) signed with Fremantle from Port Adelaide
-    Troy Chaplin (restricted) signed with Richmond from Port Adelaide
-    Shannon Byrnes (unrestricted) signed with Melbourne from Geelong
-    Tom Murphy (unrestricted) signed with Gold Coast from Hawthorn
-    Brent Moloney (restricted) signed with the Brisbane Lions from Melbourne
-    Jared Rivers (unrestricted) signed with Geelong from Melbourne
-    Clinton Young (unrestricted) signed with Collingwood from Hawthorn

Restricted free agent Angus Monfries joined Port Adelaide on a four-year deal, but Essendon accepted the Power's third-round pick (48) in exchange for Monfries with Port keen to maximise the compensation it will receive for the loss of Pearce and Chaplin.

Free agents like Russell, Thornton and Salopek can still join a club without nominating for the NAB AFL Draft after November 1 when delisted players are free to sign with any club, but compensation will not be awarded for players signed in this manner.

AFL investigator Ken Wood, in consultation with other AFL officials, made the call on the level of compensation to be awarded to clubs who had lost free agents.
