PORT Adelaide midfielder David Rodan has confirmed he is joining Melbourne, using his Twitter account to announce the move.

The Demons will give up pick No.88 in the NAB AFL Draft to secure the speedy veteran.

Earlier this month, the Power said Rodan would be delisted, but officially he remained on the club's list.

If Melbourne had not traded for him, Rodan would have been able to be recruited next week in the Gillette AFL Delisted Player Free Agency Period.

Rodan turned 29 in early October and has played 176 games since his debut in 2002 and kicked 129 goals.

He played 111 games with Port after transferring from Richmond in 2006, where he played 65 matches.

He played with Port Adelaide in the 2007 AFL Grand Final.

At his best he is an exciting midfielder, with great evasive skills and run. He will provide the Demons with a spark as an attacking player through the middle of the ground.

In 2012, he played just 10 games but played in the final four matches of the season. He won a spot back in the team after Port Adelaide sacked Matthew Primus as coach, with Garry Hocking taking over.

Rodan is a popular player who battled for recognition at Richmond after being drafted with selection No.33 in the 2001 AFL National Draft.

He missed the 2005 season after a knee reconstruction and then joined Port Adelaide where he flourished.

He was forced to undergo a LARS reconstruction on his left knee at the end of both the 2009 and 2010 seasons but has played 26 senior games since his last reconstruction.

A dual Morrish Medal winner in 2000-01, Rodan also won a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination in 2002 and represented Australia in the International Rules series against Ireland in 2008.
