AN ASSAULT charge against Collingwood youngster Marley Williams has been upgraded to the more serious charge of grievous bodily harm.

Western Australia police confirmed the upgrade to AFL.com.au on Thursday.

The footballer's next court date is March 7.

Williams was charged after a December nightclub fight in his hometown of Albany, Western Australia which allegedly left a 29-year-old man with a broken jaw.

He fronted court last month via video link from Melbourne, pleading not guilty to the original assault charge.

The Magpie played six games last season, having been promoted off the club's rookie list.

Collingwood has already taken its own action against the 19-year-old, sending him to do volunteer work with the Salvation Army.

The club is aware of the development but declined to comment when contacted by AFL.com.au.
