GEELONG has taken a punt on 22-year-old Irishman Padraig Lucey, who was cut from Foxtel's reality television series The Recruit last week.

He has joined the club as a Category B Rookie and the club hopes he can develop into a mobile big man.

Lucey attended an international combine in Dublin, Ireland, in February 2013 and played for a European team against the AIS-AFL Academy this year.

Brad Ottens, a triple premiership player with the Cats and ruck coach for the past three seasons, coached that team.

Lucey has played Gaelic football for St Brendan's (Killarney) and Kerry. He also played basketball in Ireland.

Geelong cast its eye over Lucey in a trial at Simonds Stadium.

Lucey told geelongcats.com.au joining the Cats "just felt right" and he sensed that he could fit into the club.

He conceded he was a long way from being AFL standard but "there is a determination in me to get there some day".

"When I came down for a trial they saw a combination of athleticism, could mark the ball and kick the ball fairly well for a big guy," Lucey said.

Lucey will begin at the club in November.
