HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson faces a selection dilemma ahead of Saturday's preliminary final against Port Adelaide, with forward Cyril Rioli training strongly at Waverley Park on Thursday.

The star forward made it through Hawthorn's main training session unscathed, but did leave the track early.

Rioli trained with the main group for an hour but then left the field 15 minutes before his teammates.

The 25-year-old, who hasn't played since round 15 when he injured his hamstring, ran and moved well at Waverley Park, weaving his way in and out of traffic during several match simulation drills.

His early departure should be no cause for concern, however, with Rioli jogging off the track, jumping the fence and sprinting up the hill at Waverley Park.

Important defender Matt Suckling also trained strongly and will be available for selection for the clash at the MCG.

Veteran Shaun Burgoyne was missing from the main session, while midfielder Liam Shiels was unsighted after the first 20 minutes of training.

Shiels warmed up with the main group, but did not participate in the training drills after that and was spotted by several fans leaving the ground.

With Suckling and Rioli chances to return to the senior side, Clarkson will have the tough job of deciding who is left out.

Defender Taylor Duryea excelled against Geelong in the Hawks’ qualifying final and would be unlucky to be axed, while Jonathon Simpkin has earned a reputation as a super sub.
