About the Rookie Reporter Program
Established in 2012, the Youth Central AFL Rookie Reporter Program gives aspiring journalists an opportunity to learn from some of the best sports reporters and editors in the country.

On 7 October 2014, the Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith launched the 2015 program at AFL House.

"The program has given rookies a fantastic opportunity to find out first-hand how the fast-paced sport media industry works," Mr Smith said.

Mr Smith said that, as well as learning how a high-profile digital media outlet runs, rookie reporters will build up a solid portfolio of work that will help put them on the path to a career in journalism.

Mr Smith joined with AFL general manager Peter Campbell to congratulate Susan Giese, 23, from Werribee, and Giulio Di Giorgio, 22, from Pascoe Vale, on successfully completing the 2014 program – and kicking goals along the way.

"Under close guidance of senior staff, Susan and Giulio were mentored and trained in all aspects of media, including interviewing high-profile footy personalities, working in the press-box on match days and attending press conferences," Mr Smith said.

Susan said the opportunity to work with the AFL Media team had been a "huge eye opener."

"Being in the production room, watching it all unfold and getting a feel for how the whole team comes together is something I haven’t done before," Susan said. "It’s a good multiplatform news space and it’s great to be part of it."
