PORT Adelaide is poised to take Robbie Gray off next year's free agency market, with the star midfielder set to sign a new three-year deal.

Gray could have explored free agency at the end of next season, along with the likes of Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield, Richmond captain Trent Cotchin and Geelong's Tom Hawkins.

But AFL.com.au understands Gray, 26, has agreed to terms on a new contract that will keep him at Alberton Oval to the end of 2018.

Gray enjoyed a career-best season in 2014, winning the Power's best and fairest award and the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award.

The former Oakleigh Charger was also selected in the All Australian team after averaging 24.9 possessions a game in 2014 and kicking 42 goals.

He led the AFL for goal assists (33) and was fifth in the competition for clearances (145 at an average of 5.8 a game).

Gray said at the Power's best and fairest count earlier this month that he was determined to help Port improve on 2014's third-place finish next season.

"I think I was able to play the most consistent footy I've been able to play this year and the body's been really good," Gray said.

"The main thing is that the group keeps playing some good footy.

"We want to have a big summer and get back [to the preliminary final] next year and go a couple better."

Gray has played 115 games for Port since being drafted with pick No. 55 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft.

In 2012, he suffered a sickening anterior cruciate ligament rupture that ended his season after just two games.

But he bounced back well in 2013, playing 20 games as the Power returned to the finals in Ken Hinkley's first season as coach.

Gray played all 25 of the Power's games this year.
