CONVINCING Fremantle players to wear boots with longer stops in slippery conditions has become a great source of frustration for coach Ross Lyon.

The Dockers played in wet conditions for the fourth consecutive match on Thursday night in their seven-point win over Collingwood at Domain Stadium.

Five talking points: Fremantle v Collingwood

A lot of players from both teams slipped over at critical times in the high-pressured game.

Lyon said he had addressed boot selection with his players a number of times but is struggling to get the message across.

"Look, we've spoken about that," Lyon said post-match.

"It's a really fascinating conversation if you want to have it with the modern player.

"We were brought up on moulds or screw-ins and they’ve got all these different moulds.

"But one of our backs, Cam Sutcliffe, used to slip over a bit and he's changed to screw-ins and he doesn't slip over.

"So probably a few could take a leaf out of his book to be blatantly honest. It's an interesting conversation and one that's hard to win."

Matt de Boer told AFL.com.au after the match that conditions had tricked the players after perfect weather in Perth in the days leading up to the game.

"The conditions were quite deceptive," de Boer said.

"It looked a nice night for footy but there were a few too many boys slipping over, which wasn't ideal. That will be addressed as well with boot selection.

"A lot of the boys do have the long stops.

"I guess it's just about evaluating the conditions as soon as possible and then even making the change during the night if things aren't going well."
