FREMANTLE star Nat Fyfe remains in the frame to return this week from his groin injury after undergoing an extensive fitness test at Fremantle Oval on Wednesday.

Fyfe trained on his own for more than 45 minutes under the watchful eye of Dockers' sports science manager Jason Weber.

Fyfe worked through some low intensity 50m runs before progressing to some agility work to test out the groin problem that kept him out of the Dockers' 21-point win over Greater Western Sydney last Sunday.

The overwhelming Brownlow Medal favourite then completed a series of 150m runs before doing more agility work and some stationary kicking with Weber and appeared to move without trouble during the solid session.

Teammate David Mundy said he did not know whether Fyfe would be available for this Sunday's clash with St Kilda.

"That's the first time I've seen him do anything to be honest," Mundy said.

"I've got no idea about when he'll be back or how he's going.

"One thing I do know is he'll be doing everything he can to get back as soon as he can, and when he does come back he'll be right."

Mundy said the midfield group had spoken about stepping up in Fyfe's absence last week and was pleased with how Matt de Boer, Tendai Mzungu and Nick Suban performed against the Giants.

The veteran midfielder also said the Dockers did make some improvements to their ball movement last week.

"I thought we took some big strides forward in that area," Mundy said.

"We obviously lacked a bit of polish and (had) a (few) turnovers and a few suicidal play-ons.

"We were going too quick at some stages. It's a problem with our group. We get a message and we tend to overcorrect sometimes. It's just about trying to find that balance now and getting a bit more polish and hitting a few more targets moving forward."

The Dockers have a poor recent record against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium. They have lost the last two encounters and have only beaten the Saints at the venue just once in nine attempts.

Mundy is keen to atone for their poor showing against in round 18 last season, when the bottom-placed Saints smashed the Dockers by 58 points to end an 11-game losing streak.

"We are certainly under no illusions about how we performed last time we met them over there," Mundy said.

"We were very disappointed in that game. We are a very proud group, proud of what we've been able to achieve over the last few years and that was certainly a blip on the radar and something we will be aiming to not have happen again."

The Dockers will have to travel without key defender Zac Dawson after he accepted a two-week suspension for elbowing Giants forward Jeremy Cameron.

Lyon told 6PR on Tuesday night that the Dockers had a few options to replace Dawson.

Alex Silvagni is available and rookie Tanner Smith could also be used in defence if they wanted to keep Alex Pearce forward after his promising performance last week.

However, it is more likely that one of Matt Taberner, Zac Clarke or Jack Hannath would come in and play forward and Pearce would return to defence.

Michael Johnson is still at least one week away from returning from his hamstring injury.
