This weekend: Semi-final - Sandringham v Collingwood - Sunday September 13, 11.40am, North Port Oval

Defender Matt Scharenberg took the honours for the AFL-listed Magpies in their seven-point semi-final loss.

The 19-year-old, who is set to come out of contract at the end of October, withstood the Zebras' pressure in defence for much of the game by taking several intercept marks.

Scharenberg was well complemented by ball-winner Clinton Young, who pumped the ball inside 50 on numerous occasions, particularly in the first half where he gathered five inside 50s and kicked a goal from his 18 disposals.

Young's second-quarter goal came with a booming left-foot kick off one step.

The loss was compounded by a suspected left hamstring injury to Jonathon Marsh on the verge of half-time.

The 19-year-old appeared in visible pain and punched the ground in frustration as he was helped to his feet by trainers and taken off the ground.

Marsh suffered a serious hamstring injury on his other leg in the VFL late last season, tearing the right hamstring tendon off the bone in a match against Essendon that required surgery.

Onballer Brent Macaffer booted two goals in a solid display, while Patrick Karnezis looked lively up forward but failed to capitalise on the scoreboard, finishing with just one goal.

Defender Tony Armstrong showed promising signs in defence, but received a head knock in the dying stages of the match and was helped off the ground.

Essendon

State league affiliate: Essendon (VFL)
This weekend: Semi-final - Footscray v Essendon - Saturday September 12, 11.40am, North Port Oval

Out-of-contract ruckman Shaun McKernan produced one of the best performances of his season, kicking three goals to lead Essendon to a VFL preliminary final next Sunday.

The former Adelaide big man controlled the stoppages in the air but also won seven clearances in the 66-point win against Footscray.

The highlight of McKernan's day came at the 25-minute mark of the final quarter, when he nailed a remarkable curling right-foot snap from the boundary line.

"(McKernan) really set the scene and was able to hit the scoreboard as well," coach Hayden Skipworth told AFL.com.au.

"He's finished the year exceptionally well. He had maybe one or two quiet games, but the rest of his games at the back end of the year were fantastic.

"Hopefully he can keep this form up for next week."

Conor McKenna (one goal) was lively in attack for the Bombers, while Kyle Langford (two goals) spent time in the midfield and excelled around the stoppages with his pressure and contested ball.

Tayte Pears anchored the defence against Tom Boyd and Ayce Cordy, with Alex Browne starring in attack with three goals.

Backman Ariel Steinberg was taken from the ground in the final quarter after a heavy knock, but escaped serious injury apart from a nasty bruise under his left eye.

The Bombers will take on Williamstown at North Port Oval next Sunday.

Fremantle

State league affiliate: Peel Thunder (WAFL)
This weekend: Semi-final - Peel Thunder v East Perth - Sunday September 13, 2.10pm, Bendigo Bank Stadium

Forward Matt Taberner has strengthened his chances of being recalled for the Dockers' preliminary final in a fortnight after bagging five goals in Peel's 22-point semi-final loss.

The 22-year-old was a late withdrawal from the Dockers' qualifying final against the Sydney Swans on Saturday in what was a tactical move due to the inclement weather that was expected.

Taberner ended the game with 14 disposals, seven marks and three inside 50s in an impressive performance up forward for the Thunder.

Despite regaining a host of Fremantle-listed players for the match – Taberner, Alex Pearce, Tanner Smith, Connor Blakely, Max Duffy, Paul Duffield, Brady Grey, Ed Langdon, Jacob Ballard, Jack Hannath and Lachie Weller – Peel couldn't get the job done over the West Coast-aligned East Perth.

Langdon and Hannath joined Taberner in being named among the Thunders' best players as they were bundled out of the finals series in straight sets.

Langdon created plenty of drive with his 24 possessions, nine marks and one goal, while Hannath accumulated a game-high 22 hit-outs and had 16 disposals.

Ballard was also kept busy with 25 disposalsand and seven tackles, with Duffield not too far behind on 20 touches, six marks and five inside 50s.

GWS

State league affiliate: UWS Giants (NEAFL)
This weekend: Preliminary final - UWS Giants v Aspley - Saturday September 12, 12pm, Blacktown International Sportspark

A strong performance from Jack Steele couldn't save the Giants' season, with Aspley dominating the first NEAFL preliminary final to win by 89 points.

Steele, who played seven AFL games this season, was the Giants' leading ball-winner with 28 touches, ending his season in fine fashion after racking up 33 touches in the Giants' first final.

"Leon (Cameron) has talked a lot about who stands up in big games, and today we saw a couple of boys who said they may be able to," NEAFL coach Brett Hand told AFL.com.au.

"Jack was one and Jeremy Finlayson was the other. Their effort, attitude and work-rate, and just their ability to win the hard ball and make smart decisions, was really good.

"He (Steele) has learned a lot this year. He's still got a long way to go, but he can be proud of what he's done for the season."

Finlayson impressed off a half-back flank and pushed up onto a wing to finish with 13 possessions and seven marks.

Tom Downie was the pick of the ruckmen with 19 disposals and seven marks, while Dylan Addison kicked three goals from his 15 touches.

The Magpies have been bundled out of the SANFL finals in straight sets after Central District scored a thrilling five-point win on Sunday afternoon.

Port booted four goals to two in the final quarter to close within a kick by the final siren.

Young tall William Frampton had a chance to win the game for the Magpies, but couldn't get boot to ball before being tackled on the goal line.

Andrew Moore was huge for Port in the last term booting an important goal, while Kane Mitchell was the side's highest possession winner with 24, 11 tackles and eight clearances.

John Butcher kicked three goals and Jarrad Redden managed 46 hit-outs and a goal.

St Kilda

State league affiliate: Sandringham (VFL)
This weekend: Semi-final - Sandringham v Collingwood - Sunday September 13, 11.40am, North Port Oval

The VFL-listed players led the way for Sandringham in its seven-point semi-final victory over Collingwood.

"Overall, I don't think there was anyone who really stood out from a St Kilda (perspective) – it was pretty even right across the board," Zebras coach Paul Hudson told AFL.com.au.

Hudson said Darren Minchington fitted in seamlessly after playing three of the last four games for the Saints.

"Having not played with us for a few weeks, he got better in the second half and got some important ball going our way late in the (fourth) quarter," he said.

Livewire Ahmed Saad had a quiet first half, managing just two touches, but found more of the ball after half-time.

Saad's only goal for the match came from an accurate set shot in the third term, and his forward pressure acts helped lock the ball inside forward 50.

"(Saad) was just being too easy to play on … so we spoke at half-time and we changed some things up to try and get him into the game," Hudson said.

Youngster Arryn Siposs limped off the ground in the first quarter after his right leg became caught under a Clinton Young tackle, but managed to return.

"(Siposs) had some strapping and he managed to get through the game," Hudson said.

The Zebras will now take on minor premier Box Hill in a preliminary final at North Port Oval next Saturday.

Sydney Swans

West Coast

State league affiliate: East Perth (WAFL)
This weekend: Semi-final - Peel Thunder v East Perth - Sunday September 13, 2.10pm, Bendigo Bank Stadium

Omitted backman Jackson Nelson responded to his demotion from the Eagles' qualifying final against Hawthorn in the best possible way, finishing with 19 touches and eight marks.

Fellow Eagle Murray Newman was also named among East Perth's best in its 22-point semi-final win over the Fremantle-aligned Peel, collecting 10 touches, two marks and two tackles.

Kane Lucas continued to find the ball playing in his customary midfield position, accumulating 28 disposals, four tackles and four inside 50s.

The 24-year-old is yet to make his debut for the Eagles after joining the club as a delisted free agent last year.

East Perth will now take on West Perth in a preliminary final on Sunday, and is just one win away from featuring in its third consecutive WAFL Grand Final.

Western Bulldogs

State league affiliate: Footscray (VFL)
This weekend: Semi-final - Footscray v Essendon - Saturday September 12, 11.40am, North Port Oval

Reigning premier Footscray exited the finals in straight sets with a 66-point loss, robbing the Western Bulldogs of their reserves set-up for the rest of the AFL finals, should they need them.

Senior emergencies Tom Boyd and Daniel Talia both played, but Bailey Dale was held over as cover for the Bulldogs' elimination final at the MCG on Saturday night.

Boyd kicked two early goals and could have slotted a third but hit the post with a set shot from 55m. He lined up on Bombers defender Tayte Pears for much of the match and also spent time in the ruck.

Talia moved between defence and attack and kicked one goal, taking an impressive mark in a rare highlight for the Dogs.
