This weekend: Preliminary final - Box Hill v Sandringham - Saturday September 19, 2.40pm, North Port Oval

Box Hill will take part in its third successive VFL Grand Final after defeating Sandringham by seven points in Saturday's preliminary final.

Defender Matt Spangher impressed in the backline with nine marks, including several intercept marks across half-back.

The 28-year-old booted the first goal of the match – and his first major of the season – after drifting forward to mark in the goal square.

The Hawks, who fielded 16 AFL-listed players, dominated the first quarter by booting five goals to one to open up a match-high 29-point lead.

Onballer Will Langford, who was omitted from the semi-final against Adelaide, spent the last 10 minutes of the third term on the interchange bench and used his fresh legs to his advantage.

Langford kicked the match-winning goal at the 28-minute mark of the final term, timing his run to perfection and crumbing the ball in the goal square to put the Hawks seven points in front.

Experienced midfielders Jonathan Simpkin (34 touches) and Brendan Whitecross (32 touches) also played important roles in the Hawks' victory.

In attack, joint Frosty Miller medallist James Sicily continued his good run with three goals, while small forward Jed Anderson was lively in the first half with two majors.

Ruckman Jonathon Ceglar was a late withdrawal from the game due to illness.

St Kilda

State league affiliate: Sandringham (VFL)
This weekend: Preliminary final - Box Hill v Sandringham - Saturday September 19, 2.40pm, North Port Oval

Midfielder Darren Minchington put in a best-on-ground performance in Sandringham's agonising seven-point preliminary final loss to Box Hill on Saturday.

After the Hawks kicked away with a 29-point quarter-time advantage, the 21-year-old provided his team with the spark it desperately needed in the second quarter.

Minchington, who signed a one-year deal with the Saints earlier this month, finished the game with 35 disposals (25 contested), 15 clearances, 12 inside 50s and two goals in a standout display.

One of Minchington's many highlights came early in the final term, when he won the centre clearance by dribbling the ball to half-forward.

He then received a follow-up handball from Saint Josh Saunders and slotted a running goal from outside 50m to reduce the Zebras' deficit to 11 points.

Small forward Ahmed Saad benefited from Minchington's clean ball use in the centre.

The 25-year-old livewire sprung to life in the second term, working hand in hand with Minchington as the Zebras kicked three goals in the space of seven minutes.

Saad ended the match with two goals, while forward Arryn Siposs, developing utility Brodie Murdoch and Saunders booted one major apiece.

The Zebras missed out on making their first VFL Grand Final appearance since 2006.

West Coast

State league affiliate: East Perth (WAFL)
This weekend: Preliminary final - West Perth v East Perth - Sunday September 20, 2.10pm, HBF Arena

East Perth has missed out on the opportunity of taking part in its third straight WAFL Grand Final, losing to West Perth by 29 points on Sunday.

After his 28-possession game last week, midfielder Kane Lucas accumulated the most disposals of all the Eagles-listed players, ending with 17 touches, an equal game-high eight tackles and three inside 50s.

The 24-year-old, who was teken with pick No.12 in 2009, has found a good patch of form at the right time, but has yet to make debut for the Eagles since crossing over from Carlton as a delisted free agent.

Youngster Dylan Main (12 touches) registered two goals in a minute late in the third quarter to level the scores, but the Falcons surged ahead in the final term with five goals to one.

Defender Jackson Nelson had 15 disposals and a goal, while rookie Corey Adamson, a former baseballer, showed plenty of aggression with seven tackles to go with his 16 possessions and one goal.

Experienced duo Patrick McGinnity and restricted free agent Scott Selwood were ineligible to take part in the preliminary final because they had played under five games for the Royals this season.

McGinnity had played four WAFL games, while Selwood had featured in two matches this season.

Under the qualification rules for the AFL-aligned clubs, players must have made at least five WAFL appearances to be able to play on any weekend that Fremantle or West Coast aren't playing.

The Royals last won the WAFL premiership in 2002 and fell short of the ultimate prize in their past two Grand Final attempts in 2013 and 2014.
