HERITIER Lumumba will help make the call on whether he will play in round one against Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

Lumumba had surgery on both ankles at the end of last season, but has now played two consecutive VFL practice matches.

Angus Brayshaw and Lynden Dunn also played in last Saturday's game for the Casey Scorpions.

Brayshaw, 20, injured his left knee in the first few seconds of Melbourne's opening pre-season match against Port Adelaide, while Dunn, 28, missed Melbourne's final NAB Challenge game against St Kilda with a groin complaint.

Roos said he would not give as much weight to Brayshaw's thoughts on his own fitness as he would with Lumumba.

"'H' [Heritier Lumumba], being a bit more experienced, you probably rely a bit on him, on how he's actually feeling. He's been around footy for 10 or 12 years," Roos said.

"You probably don't engage Angus, because he'll be saying 'I'm ready to play, I'm ready to play'. 'H' is a bit more considered.

"There's probably four or five that are still in the mix. We're in a reasonable position, so we don't have to rush anyone back."

Brayshaw had 17 disposals for the Scorpions while Lumumba showed his trademark dash. Dunn played well in defence and moved freely.

Lumumba, Brayshaw and Dunn trained on Monday in a group that spent the session mostly running and stretching.

The rest of the team did match simulation drills, with Aaron vandenBerg among those.

VandenBerg didn't play for Casey last Saturday, but coach Paul Roos said the 24-year-old should be fit to take on the Giants after missing the clash with the Saints.

"He's done a full pre-season and has played the two games, so we weren't particularly worried [about playing him in the VFL]," Roos said.

"Unless something happens today or Wednesday, he's very much in the mix for the weekend."

Roos said key defender Oscar McDonald could play against GWS. Oscar is the younger brother and teammate of Tom McDonald.

"He's in the mix, and that's one of the reasons why he played on the weekend," Roos said.

"We purposely rested him [against the Western Bulldogs] because we felt he was a little bit off, then he came back and played better the next week [against the Saints]."
