THE SYDNEY Swans should worry about their own academy rather than weighing into issues surrounding GWS, says Giants CEO David Matthews.

Swans list manager Kinnear Beatson told AFL.com.au's Road to the Draft podcast he believed clubs should have to show they had helped develop a player before claiming him.

The academy bidding rules allow the New South Wales and Queensland teams access to draft players from certain regions at a 20 per cent discount, based on points values assigned to each draft pick.

The AFL recently told the Giants they did not have priority access to exciting young forward Todd Marshall.

The official reason for Marshall's ineligibility was a concern regarding his registration.

In response to Beatson's comments that the AFL had made the right decision in not allowing GWS priority access to Marshall, Matthews was far from happy.

"I’m disappointed in Kinnear’s response,” Matthews told News Corp.

"It sounded like a Victorian view to me. They’re comments that invite scrutiny on his own academy.

"I’m not sure if that’s where we want to go. It’s really a matter between the Giants and the AFL, in relation to academy eligibility.

"The Swans, Giants, Suns and Lions need to stay strong on our academy zones."

Marshall spent two winters in England playing cricket before choosing to pursue football.

He is still expected to be a high draft selection later this year.
