The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the matches played in round nine of the 2016 Toyota AFL premiership season. The following charges were laid:

Charges Laid:

Callum Sinclair, Sydney Swans, has been charged with engaging in rough conduct against Sam Mitchell, Hawthorn, during the third quarter of the Round Nine match between the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn, played at the MCG on Friday May 20, 2016.

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Hawthorn Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct with low impact to the body. The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction.

Tom Jonas, Port Adelaide, has been charged with striking Andrew Gaff, West Coast, during the third quarter of the Round Nine match between Port Adelaide and West Coast, played at Adelaide Oval on Saturday May 21, 2016.

In summary, he has been referred directly to the Tribunal for the case to be heard, and does not have the option of accepting an early plea.

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the West Coast Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct with severe impact to the head. The incident was classified as a direct referral to the Tribunal. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea was not available for this offence.

Hamish Hartlett, Port Adelaide, has been charged with a third offence of being involved in a melee during the third quarter of the Round Nine match between Port Adelaide and West Coast, played at Adelaide Oval on Saturday May 21, 2016.

In summary, he can accept a $2500 sanction with an early plea.

A third offence for being involved in a melee is a $4000 sanction. An early plea enables the player to accept a $2500 sanction.

Luke Shuey, West Coast, has been charged with a second offence of being involved in a melee during the third quarter of the Round Nine match between West Coast and Port Adelaide, played at Adelaide Oval on Saturday May 21, 2016.

The incident was classified as a three-match sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a two-match sanction.

Jimmy Webster, St Kilda, has been charged with a second offence of being involved in a melee during the second quarter of the Round Nine match between St Kilda and Essendon, played at Etihad Stadium on Sunday May 22, 2016.

Mason Redman, Essendon, has been charged with a first offence of being involved in a melee during the second quarter of the Round Nine match between Essendon and St Kilda, played at Etihad Stadium on Sunday May 22, 2016.

David Armitage, St Kilda, has been charged with engaging in rough conduct against Orazio Fantasia, Essendon, during the third quarter of the Round Nine match between St Kilda and Essendon, played at Etihad Stadium on Sunday May 22, 2016.

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available video evidence and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as careless conduct with low impact to the head. The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction. The player has no applicable record which impacts the penalty. An early plea enables the player to accept a $1000 sanction.

Other Incidents Assessed:

The match day report laid against Port Adelaide’s Robbie Gray for tripping West Coast’s Mark LeCras was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below that required for a report. No further action was taken.

The match day report laid against Richmond’s Ty Vickery for striking Fremantle’s Nick Suban during the third quarter was assessed. It was the view of the panel the force used was below that required for a report. No further action was taken.

The match day report laid against Fremantle’s Zac Dawson for engaging in rough conduct against Richmond’s Steven Morris during the third quarter was assessed. The panel said Dawson was running towards the contest in a bid to mark the ball. Morris was running back with the flight of the ball and got to the contest first to complete the mark. Dawson had his left hand open and made contact across the front of Morris with his bicep / upper arm area. It was the view of the panel there was insufficient high contact made to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell and the Sydney Swans’ Dan Hannebery from the second quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. The ball was kicked forward to a contest in the Hawthorn attacking area. Mitchell and Hannebery were in front of the contest seeking to make position. Mitchell pushed Hannebery with an open hand and made high contact. It was the view of the panel the action was not a striking motion and was not a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between St Kilda’s Leigh Montagna and Essendon’s Mark Baguley from the second quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Baguley tackled Montagna to the ground after play had stopped. A melee involving several players then took place, which the MRP has acted on separately. It was the view of the panel the contact between Montagna and Baguley was below the force required for a report. No further action was taken.
