LIONS legend Simon Black has been named the club's best recent player at a Hall of Fame event on Saturday night.

The ceremony at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne featured over 600 attendees and paid tribute to some of the game's most celebrated figures in the Fitzroy-Brisbane merged VFL/AFL history.

Black, the 2002 Brownlow medalist, was an integral part of the Lions' triple-premiership era from 2001-2003 and co-captained the club in 2007 and 2008.

Throughout his 322-game career, Black was unequivocally respected as one of the most dominant inside midfielders and continues to serve the club as an assistant coach.

Edging out Jonathan Brown to claim the title, Black now joins decorated names such as Paul Roos, Roger Merrett and Michael Voss in a momentous group.

Esteemed former teammate Luke Power was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame along with Gary Pert, a starring defender for the Lions and then Collingwood.

Power was the complete modern-day midfielder who had the ability to drift forward and contribute goals, while Pert was renowned as one of the all-time greats to play at full-back.

Utility Jason Akermanis was also recognised for his outstanding contribution to the club. Controversial at times, Akermanis was acclaimed for his freakish skills and pure football talent.

Rounding out the eight new inductees were Arthur Wilson, George Coates, Norm Johnstone, Jimmy Freake and Matt Rendell.

The independent Hall of Fame selection committee comprised of four influential former club officials – Graeme Downie, Peter Blucher, Robert Walls and Arthur Wilson.

To commemorate the event, the Lions wore Fitzroy-inspired guernseys against Richmond on Saturday afternoon, but succumbed to a disappointing 42-point loss.

The players remained in Melbourne on Saturday night to attend the Hall of Fame ceremony.
