MELBOURNE is hopeful star forward Jesse Hogan will be fit to play against Hawthorn despite having a scan on his left knee on Monday.

The results have revealed no significant damage, although the spearhead has some superficial bruising in his knee, which has the potential to cause discomfort.

Hogan's knee collided with the behind post as he took a sliding mark in the second quarter, and although he was sore, he played out the game against Gold Coast on Sunday.

Hogan arrived at the club on Monday morning with his knee bandaged but was moving quite freely, according to teammate Jack Watts.

The 21-year-old will need to get through training this week to prove his fitness for Saturday's game at the MCG following a six-day break, but at this stage the club expects him to play.

If Hogan is ruled out, first-year forward Sam Weideman is a strong chance to make his debut for the Demons.

Weideman, pick No.9 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, kicked three goals in the Casey Scorpions' 78-point win over Coburg in the VFL at the weekend.

The 19-year-old has kicked 20 goals in 11 matches for the Scorpions this season. Weideman, who stands at 195cm, competes strongly in the air and has good athleticism when the ball hits the deck.

Teammate Jack Watts said the young forward is ready to play if called upon.

"Sammy Weideman played really well in the VFL and he hasn't put a foot wrong since he's been here," Watts said.

"He's aggressive and he flies for his marks and we all really want to play with him, so it'll be interesting if Jesse doesn't get up."

Experienced big man Cam Pedersen was also influential in the Scorpions' win, gathering 21 disposals, 13 tackles, seven marks, 16 hit-outs, as well as kicking 1.4, to thrust his name into the selection mix.
