A YOUNG Afghani refugee has been announced as the Brisbane Lions' No.1 ticket holder for its AFL Women's team.

Zimra Hussain, a 10-year-old from Toowoomba, started playing football less than a year ago after arriving in Australia with her family from war-torn Afghanistan in 2014.

She told the Lions' website that football – which she plays wearing a hijab – had helped her settle into her new community.

"It's my passion, making new friends, and it's Australia's game so I want to be part of it," Zimra said.

Zimra was encouraged to play football through her local church pastor, Ross Savill, who runs a program in the region introducing refugees to the sport.

Brisbane Lions Women's CEO Breeanna Brock spotted Zimra at an under 12s schoolgirls championships where her skill and attack on the footy stood out.

"To see a young girl who's come half way around the world and is now loving our game, I just thought, 'Here's someone who is inspiring not just to me, but to a whole group of young girls out there as well'," Brock said.

"We hope that Zimra can represent the Lions out in her region and encourage more girls to play footy."

However, Zimra may now have to change allegiances – she previously told the ABC's website she barracks for Adelaide because her favourite player is Eddie Betts, who is "like a magician".
