Richmond defender Bachar Houli's two-match ban for striking Carlton forward Jed Lamb will be challenged after AFL football operations manager Simon Lethlean said it was "manifestly inadequate".

Lamb was left concussed and is no certainty to face Adelaide on Saturday afternoon at the MCG.

At the Tribunal, AFL legal counsel Andrew Woods asked Houli to be rubbed out for four games while Houli's representatives, Sam and Michael Tovey, called for a two-game suspension.

Woods will again represent the AFL in front of the Appeals Board.

Only two of 16 players have successfully appealed cases. Melbourne midfielder Jack Viney was the last, when his two-match ban for rough conduct on Adelaide forward Tom Lynch was overturned in 2014.
