The run home: How the race for the finals is shaping up

MELBOURNE is feeling the effects of playing four games in 18 days, with co-captain Jack Viney the latest name to be added to an ever-growing Demons casualty ward and fellow midfielder Dom Tyson also under a cloud.

Viney experienced a case of plantar fasciitis in his right foot in Friday night's loss to Sydney, while Tyson picked up a knee complaint late in the same game.

Concerns grew when Viney failed to run out with his teammates after half-time, only emerging from the rooms about halfway through the third quarter to take his place on the bench.

The plantar fascia ligament runs from the heel along the arch of the foot.

An injury cloud hovered over Viney in the lead-up to the clash with Sydney due to a sore right shoulder he received in a heavy bump from West Coast captain Shannon Hurn last week.

Viney joins fellow co-captain Nathan Jones (quad) on the Demons' mounting injury list alongside forward Jeff Garlett (hamstring), Jesse Hogan (testicular cancer), Christian Salem (hamstring), Jack Watts (hamstring) and Angus Brayshaw (concussion).

Demons defender Sam Frost experienced right hamstring tightness against the Swans and received treatment during the second quarter, before playing out the game.

After the 35-point loss to the Swans, Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said Garlett remained in contention to return to face Carlton on Sunday at the MCG.

Goodwin added Hogan was "getting closer and closer" to playing his first game since round seven.

Fremantle ruckman Aaron Sandilands will miss the rest of the season after re-aggravating the right hamstring injury that had kept him out since round nine.

The 34-year-old reached for his right leg as he slid to spoil a marking attempt from St Kilda defender Sam Gilbert.

Sandilands had ice applied high to his hamstring and took no further part, leaving youngster Sean Darcy to shoulder the ruck duties.

"It's a significant injury and it's season ending," Dockers coach Ross Lyon confirmed post-match.

Greater Western Sydney debutant Jeremy Finlayson had his maiden game abruptly cut short by a suspected left medial ligament injury he suffered in the second quarter against Geelong.

The 21-year-old hurt his knee when he was brought to ground in a tackle from Cats debutant Wylie Buzza.

Finlayson, who was visibly frustrated as the medicos examined his knee, emerged from the rooms after half-time on crutches and wearing a knee brace.

North Melbourne forward Jarrad Waite finished the game against Gold Coast on the bench with ice strapped around his right calf.

"Fingers crossed he comes up OK, but we can't give a definitive diagnosis just yet," Kangaroos coach Brad Scott said post-match.

Brisbane Lions defender Darcy Gardiner dislocated his left elbow in the first quarter against Essendon as he reached out to stop Bombers forward Orazio Fantasia running forward.

Gardiner, who is likely to miss the rest of the season, was escorted from the ground cradling his arm and was taken to hospital for further assessment.

Adelaide defender Kyle Hartigan pinged his left hamstring as he tried to spoil Carlton youngster Charlie Curnow's marking attempt in front of the interchange gates late in the third quarter.

Hartigan immediately reached for his upper leg and was visibility frustrated on the bench.

The 25-year-old first appeared to overstretch his hamstring earlier in the same quarter as he tapped the ball out of bounds deep in the Blues' forward pocket, but remained on the ground.

West Coast has its own hamstring concerns, with veteran defender Sam Butler unable to return after suffering a left hamstring injury during the third quarter against the Western Bulldogs.

Eagles defender Sharrod Wellingham was on and off the ground throughout the third term with a left hip problem after Bulldog Jack Redpath's knee collided into him in a marking contest.

Wellingham sat out the final quarter due to the hip complaint.

Both Butler and Wellingham received a call-up after performing with WAFL affiliate East Perth last weekend.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson is facing a welcome selection dilemma this week, with Shannon Hurn (concussion), Josh Kennedy (calf), Mark LeCras (hip), Matt Priddis (soreness), Jackson Nelson (hamstring) and Scott Lycett all potentially available.

Gold Coast midfielder Pearce Hanley experienced a recurrent left hamstring complaint which forced him to sit out the second half against North Melbourne.

Last week, the 28-year-old had left hamstring tightness early in the final quarter against St Kilda when he lunged to put pressure on an opponent and sat out the rest of the game.

"He didn't do it, but it feels the same as what it was last week," Suns coach Rodney Eade said post-match.

Sydney defender Callum Mills lasted just four-and-a-half minutes into the match against Melbourne after receiving a round-arm, off-the-ball punch to his jaw from Demon Tom Bugg, who is facing a lengthy suspension.

Mills walked to the rooms for a concussion assessment and cut a dejected figure when he reappeared on the bench later in the first term donning a tracksuit top and being unable to play on.
