GREATER Western Sydney has tweaked its training program to avoid adding to the lengthy injury list that threatens to derail the club's premiership ambitions.

The Giants have been hit hard by players being sidelined this year.

Stars Stephen Coniglio (ankle) and Brett Deledio (calf) returned through the NEAFL last Saturday after lengthy stints out, while Jeremy Cameron (hamstring) and Dylan Shiel (shoulder) are no certainties to face Fremantle at Spotless Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Some of their guns have been hurt at training.

Toby Greene missed the draws against Geelong and Hawthorn in the last month because of an ankle complaint he picked up at a skills session, and co-captain Phil Davis was absent from the two-point victory against the Western Bulldogs in round six after experiencing hamstring tightness in the week leading up to that game.

Experienced defender Heath Shaw told Melbourne radio station SEN on Wednesday morning the change was made to try to limit soft tissue injuries.

"It's a fine balance because we want to try and train at the highest intensity possible, but with the injuries we've had, we don't want to add to that any more on the training track," Shaw said.

"We're mixing up different things throughout. We're doing a little bit more competitive stuff but then we're just trying to get our hit-out in a short space rather than dragging out long periods of training sessions.

"Just minor changes, nothing too dramatic, and all clubs would do that.

"They try and mix it up as much as possible throughout the year to keep the players on their toes."

GWS is in third spot with a 10-5 record and two draws. It has won just one of its past six matches.
