GARY Ablett and Steven May will be given right up until Saturday night's game against Richmond to prove their fitness, but Suns coach Rodney Eade says no risks will be taken with either of his stars.

Ablett has missed three of Gold Coast's past five matches with soft tissue injuries, while May also missed last Saturday's loss to the Western Bulldogs with a hamstring issue.

Both players will be named in the Suns' 22 and tested at their main training session on Thursday night.

Eade said final selection would then depend how they pulled up on Friday and Saturday.

"If they're not 100 per cent, we won't be taking any risks with them," he said.

Ablett has missed the past three away matches with a combination of calf and hamstring troubles, and Eade said travel was a factor in their decision to leave him out.

"Against Collingwood (in round 17) we'd planned to play him a bit forward and limit his game-time, but with two injuries in the first quarter, we were hamstrung a bit, excuse the expression, and he ended up getting 90 per cent of game time," he said.

"It was quite sore after the game and during the week, so again it was not worth the risk of taking him interstate and playing.

"He's really keen to play this week and the week after (against Fremantle in Perth), so hopefully he can get through training."

Eade said if May was unavailable, rookie Max Spencer was in line to debut to help the Suns' undersized and undermanned defence.
