FREMANTLE young gun Lachie Weller could be thrown the challenge of stepping into injured star Michael Walter's important midfield role in Saturday's clash against Greater Western Sydney.

In a severe blow for the Dockers, Walters will miss the rest of the season after suffering a minor PCL tear in last round's 52-point loss to Hawthorn.

Weller was drafted as an inside midfielder with pick 13 in 2014 but has spent most of this season across half-back and on a wing to maximise his run and kicking skills.

But the Dockers, who are facing several tough calls on sore players for the Giants trip, could throw the 21-year-old into the engine room.

"Maybe we'll look at Lachie Weller through there because ultimately … he was drafted as an inside mid," coach Ross Lyon said.

"Is he that in AFL footy? That's debatable but he's finishing his schooling off, forward, back, wing and the next piece is inside.

"But it's so physical in there it takes some of your run away because you're getting hit a lot more and you lose a bit of run, that's why those big body guys handle it a bit better.

"(Walters) is a loss, but it's an opportunity. We haven’t finalised yet, we've only done one session about eight guys didn't train because they were a bit sore.

"We've got a fair bit to work through post the session, there's a lot of decisions to be made based around that."

Strong-bodied youngster Connor Blakey could also help cover for Walters, although the 21-year-old has "blossomed" across half-back according to Lyon and is averaging 30 touches over the past month.

Freo has already lost veteran Lee Spurr (calf) from defence, however half-back Luke Ryan and versatile tall Brennan Cox will be available to face the Giants after club-imposed suspensions for drinking alcohol after the Western Derby.

"They're good lads, they were disappointed in themselves, they knew they'd let themselves down," Lyon said.

"They wished they hadn't indulged and been more disciplined.

"They made a slight error of judgement and they'll be better for it."

Saturday's daunting clash against the Giants will be the first opportunity for emerging young ruckman Sean Darcy to square-off against Shane Mumford.

"He's playing his idol this week, hopefully he doesn't give the ball back to him when he shouldn't," Lyon said in a tongue-in-cheek reference to Griffin Logue's incident with Nick Riewoldt in round 15.

"Both of them in their youth have eaten a fair bit of sausages, him and Mumford.

"He's got a tough task this week, he's a fierce competitor, but so is our young bloke and it will be great to see them go head-to-head."

Lyon said the Dockers, who have lost seven of their last eight games, were working on their attacking craft after kicking just 44 and 48 points in the past two weeks, but added "it needs a summer of work".

Injury-plagued star Harley Bennell is unlikely to be added to the forward mix anytime soon after just two games back at Peel following long-running calf issues.

"He's really glowing a bit, he feels good, but underneath that there's that risk profile," Lyon said.

"He'll continue to build and build and then hopefully get to a point where we can select him for the AFL but that's a few weeks in hand yet."
