A GARY Ablett return to Geelong at the end of the season is 'unlikely', according to Cats coach Chris Scott.

Ablett has been heavily linked to the Cats this year after the Suns denied the two-time Brownlow medallist's trade request last season.

The 33-year-old is contracted until the end of 2018 at Gold Coast, but has conceded he could walk away from the game after this season.

Scott would love to have Ablett in his team next year, but said it could too hard to get the superstar back to the club.

"It is unlikely to be perfectly frank," Scott told SEN on Friday night.

"It is a question that should be directed to Stephen Wells.

"At the moment, it looks like there are too many obstacles for it to happen."

The prospect of Ablett, Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield all in the same team had Scott salivating, with the coach already thinking about how they would work together.

"In very simple terms, would we prefer Gary Ablett to be in our team? Yes," he said.

"You'd use (Ablett) in both parts of the ground [forward and midfield]. Geelong people, for the last 15 years, have said he could play in a similar manner to his father late in his career."

After having his attitude questioned in the round two loss to Greater Western Sydney, Ablett has nearly been back to his best.

Despite missing three of the past five matches with various injuries, Ablett is still averaging 33 touches a game.
