HAWTHORN vice-captain Liam Shiels has been withdrawn from Saturday night's clash against Carlton because of a corked hip, with Irishman Conor Glass earning a late call up.

Shiels suffered the injury in last week's win against North Melbourne in Tasmania and didn't recover in time to take on the Blues at Etihad Stadium.

"We gave him every opportunity to get up, but unfortunately he’s still not 100 per cent, so we didn’t want to take the risk," football manager Jason Burt said on the club's website.

"Conor has acquitted himself well since making his debut against Fremantle.

"He was somewhat unlucky not to be selected in the initial side this week, so we’re confident he can come in and play his role."

Glass has played four games for the Hawks this season, with the defender improving every week and using the ball well.
