DESPITE the heartbreak of missing the finals by a fingernail, Melbourne supporters are upbeat about their team's improvement in season 2017.

The Demons fell just 0.5 per cent short of a top-eight position after West Coast's final-round victory over Adelaide, but when giving their verdict in an AFL.com.au survey, fans rated Melbourne's season 6.1 out of 10.

Demon fans are also bullish about Simon Goodwin's first season in charge, with 94 per cent of respondents happy with Goodwin as coach.

Young midfielder Clayton Oliver went from strength to strength in his second AFL season, and was recognised by fans as the team's player of the season.

Much maligned forward Jack Watts' inconsistent season, which mirrored the club's own at times, saw him named the team's biggest flop for the year.

Here are the full survey results, plus a selection of Demon fans' highs and lows.

What was the moment you'll remember?

Beating Adelaide in Adelaide, by far. Best footy I have seen them play in years. Relentless, skilful and finished the game off strong.
- Rohan Beet, Knoxfield

Tom McDonald's goal in the dying seconds against West Coast.
- Alyce Collett, Ringwood Vic

Jack Watts running down the wing, taking a bounce, ignoring other options and icing the game against the Pies [in the Queen's Birthday match].
- Max Reilly, Vermont Vic

Jayden Hunt kicking a torp from about 55 metres out during the loss to the Crows.
- Michael Makai, Salisbury SA

What was the moment you'd rather forget?

The terrible capitulation to Collingwood in round 23.
- Keval Pezet, Adelaide SA

Losing to North Melbourne … twice.
- Michael Prewer, Moonee Ponds Vic

Tomas Bugg's hit on Callum Mills. Ill-disciplined and unnecessary.

The last five minutes of the West Coast-Adelaide game.
