STEVE Johnson's chances of playing in Saturday's preliminary final against Richmond remain unclear with the forward missing training on Tuesday as expected.

Johnson starred with six goals in the Giants' 67-point win over West Coast but has battled a knee injury all season, and as has been the case for most of the year, he was on light duties on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old rarely joins his teammates on the track early in the week and went through his own work with GWS fitness staff behind closed doors.

Brett Deledio, who has had troubles with both calves in 2017 and has also experienced some Achilles soreness over the past fortnight, joined Johnson in the gym, but both players are expected to take part in Wednesday's main session.

Saturday's monster clash at the MCG will be the former Tiger's 250th senior game.

If Johnson doesn't get up to face the Tigers, Devon Smith would likely be in the frame to replace him, but the small forward was also a no show on Tuesday.

Smith has missed both of the Giants' finals with a knee injury and while the absence of Johnson and Deledio is no major concern for GWS, it isn't a great sign for Smith's prospects this week.

Athletic defender Nick Haynes sent a scare through the GWS camp when he went down clutching his right knee during the second half against the Eagles, but he played out the match and was cleared of serious injury.

Haynes and vice-captain Stephen Coniglio also skipped Tuesday's light skills session, with the star midfielder suffering from illness, but both will make the trip to Melbourne to take on Richmond.
