Jack Lonie will stay a Saint for the 2018 season

DEFENDER Shane Savage and small forward Jack Lonie have re-signed with St Kilda.

Both players were due to come out of contract at the end of October, but this week Savage signed a new two-year deal, while Lonie recommitted for 2018.

Savage, 26, fell out of favour early this season, but fought back to hit impressive form as a rebounding defender over the final eight rounds.

Lonie, 21, also spent significant time in the VFL in 2017, but the Saints view the 21-year-old as an important part of their future.

"Shane's drive out of defence in the second half of the season was an important element as the club strived for a finals berth," St Kilda chief operating officer Ameet Bains said.

"After a period out of the team, he showed great resilience to win his spot back and then seize his opportunity. He was able to find great balance between defending his opponent and taking the game on with his run and elite kicking.

"Jack also demonstrated his determination to be part of the senior team, even when required to play at Sandringham. His attitude was reflected by his dominance at that level and resulted in 12 appearances in the senior side.

"Jack's forward pressure and football smarts are highly regarded, and with another strong pre-season we expect him to achieve the consistency required to become a regular senior player."

Savage joined St Kilda in the 2013 trade period after playing 56 games at Hawthorn from 2009-13. He has played 67 games for the Saints, including 20 in 2015 and 21 in 2016.

Taken by the Saints with pick No.41 in the 2014 NAB AFL Draft, Lonie has played 39 games and kicked 28 goals.
