PORT Adelaide recruit Steven Motlop is preaching a team-first mentality as the Power's newcomers aim to jell with their established core.

External expectations are high after the Power added Motlop, former Brisbane Lions skipper Tom Rockliff and Melbourne utility Jack Watts during the off-season.

The Power also brought in ex-Melbourne co-captain Jack Trengove, Gold Coast defender Trent McKenzie and North Melbourne forward Lindsay Thomas.

Motlop said it was imperative the new players bought into the Power's philosophies.

"We've got to come in and learn how to be a Port Adelaide player and bond with everyone and try to play our roles," Motlop said.

"We don't need one big hero coming in and taking the whole game over.

"We want everyone to play their role and we can win as a team, and we can lose as a team, as well."

Motlop booted 175 goals in 135 games for Geelong before he joined the Power as a restricted free agent on a four-year deal.

Cross-town rivals Adelaide and the Suns were other clubs Motlop considered before signing with the Power.

"In the end, I just thought Port Adelaide was the best fit for me," Motlop said.

"When I came in and met everyone, it just felt right.

Motlop sees his versatility as his main strength and wants to play a variety of roles.

"I want to be a well-rounded player who can play forward, on the wing and definitely in the midfield," he said.

"Sometimes playing as a forward, all forwards will say it, you can drift in and out of games.

"You've just got to keep playing your role and when you get your opportunities, you have to take them."

Power skipper Travis Boak did everything at training except for contact work on Monday morning.

Boak suffered a badly bruised hand in a training drill about 10 days ago, but he has since had his handguard removed.

"He's still running around, they're just being cautious to make sure he doesn't hurt it anymore," Motlop said.
