CHRISTMAS has come early for Geelong, with champion skipper Joel Selwood and dual All Australian defender Harry Taylor extending their tenures at the Cats.

Taylor, 31, was due to come out of contract at the end of the 2018 season and would have been an unrestricted free agent, but has added another year to his current deal.

Selwood's early re-commitment until 2021 came despite him already being locked away for the next two seasons.

The 29-year-old, the No.7 pick in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft, has captained the club for six years, played 249 games for Geelong, won three premierships and been All Australian six times.

"I feel very grateful that I get to continue at this great club for at least another four years," Selwood said.

"I've been fortunate enough to work in such a dynamic environment for a long time now and appreciate the opportunities the Geelong Football Club has given me.

"I love coming to work each day and as I look to the future, I'm excited about our list and what lies ahead as we continue to challenge in what is an extremely competitive competition."

Taylor, originally from Western Australia, didn't get his AFL shot until he was 21 years old in the 2007 draft, but has become one of the best backmen in the game in the past decade.

The 229-gamer won premierships at the Cattery in 2009 and 2011, was named All Australian twice and has served as Selwood's vice-captain since 2014.

Taylor's versatility has also seen Chris Scott use him in attack, where he has kicked at least five goals in a game on four occasions.

"I'm excited about where the club is headed and when the approach was made, it was an easy decision to extend my contract here," Taylor said.

"Every aspect of our club is first-class and provides our team with every opportunity to succeed.

"Working with such great teammates, coaches and support staff makes for a great environment and as a player it's hard to ask for more."
