STAR ruckman Max Gawn and veteran Jordan Lewis have been elevated to the vice-captaincy in a streamlined Melbourne leadership group for 2018.

Nathan Jones and Jack Viney will lead the club as co-captains for a second-straight season.

Tom McDonald and Bernie Vince, who were in the 2017 leadership group, will not remain part of the group after the club decided a more efficient leadership model would improve communication and accountability within the club.

Demons football manager Josh Mahoney said Gawn deserved a lot of credit for his elevation to the club's vice-captaincy.

"Max's emergence in this area has been substantial," he said.

"His influence and care for the entire club has really made a positive impact and becoming a vice-captain is great recognition for his hard work in this area."

Lewis, 31, had a sizeable influence on his teammates in his first season at the Demons in 2017 after crossing from Hawthorn.

The four-time premiership Hawk has earned a strong reputation for his ability to work closely with his young teammates and drive the standards around the group.

"Jordan came to the club with significant leadership experience," Mahoney said.

"He has been a great mentor and has continued to impart his knowledge onto the group.

"He will play a key role in the leadership for our club."

Jones has been in the captaincy role since 2014 and was sole skipper in 2015 and 2016, before being joined by Viney in 2017.

"The growth of Nathan and Jack last year was significant," Mahoney said.

"They formed a strong partnership and worked incredibly well together in leading the club."
